In an official letter received from the City Of Oakland, California, on June 14, 2012, Mayor Jean Quan has affirmed that the Ten Commandments – a non-secular religious doctrine carved in granite, posted on the zoo property – is established.
Her office cites a Texas Court case that allowed a similar Christian religious monument to stay on Texas State public property. Her office does not explain that the monument in Texas was allowed to stay because there are several other monuments displayed at the Texas site as well. Her office cites another biased court ruling that is based on the same Texas ruling.
Apparently, if you visit the Oakland public zoo, you must obey the various signs posted by the officials of the Zoo, and the City; the City does not explain which signs or commands are enforced by citations and ordinances. The City has not allowed any other beliefs or believers other than the established Christian Dogma and it’s proselytizers to post or express their Constitutional guaranteed opinions equally.
Here are some examples of the posted requirements and commands in the City Zoo:
You may not enter the zoo before opening time, or closing time.
You shall only believe in the one Christian God.
You may not go over the fences into the animal habitat areas.
You can not work on Sunday, it is a holy day.
You can not feed the animals.
You can not worship any idols that are not the one Christian God, nor profess belief, or honor any Buddhist, Hindu, Pagan, or Islamic God or ideology. You are not allowed to be an atheist.
You have to pay the entrance fee at designated hours to visit the zoo.
You can not have a consensual relationship with a married person.
You must honor your parents.
You can not desire your neighbors wife, or their pets, or any of their animals.
You can not swear or use the name of the Christian God in anger.
I am hoping that the Mayor of Oakland does not take the further step of installing a large shredder in front of the Zoo, to shred copies of the US Constitution to make bedding for the animals; to replace straw, hay or other animal bedding.
I am also hoping that the Mayor does not make a law to use taxpayer money to build a replica of the mythical “Noah’s Ark” to replace the zoo cages and other wildlife habitats; in preparation for the biblical prophecy of Armageddon.
This shocking step backwards by the Mayor of Oakland is a frightening example of the new wave of the poisonous blending of church and state. It is a wake up call to citizens of the Bay Area – that equal opportunity and constitutional rights for people other than Christians is being trampled on by politicians, and the establishment clause is being mocked and ignored by those in power.
