Yes it is illegal but not as this article and La Raza want to believe. It is discrimination against other minority groups who can't have the same. We can't do it for all since we won't get the teaching done that ALL students need to succeed in our society. We are "one" not just one group (Hispanics) who want to be "special" on our society.

Students wanting to learn about their culture can go to the library to read or their "cultural groups" can have their own training and books outside school.

It is like religion in America. Religious groups can train students anyway they want outside public schools. They have their own schools and books(most written by public education). groups).

This issue in Arizona is not about book
banning and it’s not about not letting communities read books that are relevant
to their culture. It is about choosing books that are appropriate for teenage
readers. All of the books that have been withdrawn and that are under review are
biased and espouse very specific political views that encourage the reader to
take an anti-American and resentful attitude. Some even present fantasy, e.g.
Aztlan, as fact. Most teenage students do not have the critical thinking skills
to maturely evaluate the material presented in these books. I have taught for
14 years at the high school and mid school level and I have never met one
teenager that understood the difference between fact and opinion. I have never
met one that knows what logical fallacies are. I have never met one that can
identify any logical fallacies (e.g. straw-man argument, appeal to authority,
red herring, etc.). I have never met one teenager that understands the
difference between correlation and causality. I have never met one teenager
that understands that just because something is called a “study” it is not
automatically scientific. I have never met one teenager that understands that one
has to ask about sample size, how the sample was chosen, etc. In other words,
they don’t know how to evaluate what they read to determine if it’s biased and
how it’s biased. Teenagers rely on adults to point out for them what is biased
and how it’s biased. And that is what is NOT happening in these ethnic studies
courses. The teachers are, in fact, using them as a platform to brainwash these
young people. Unfortunately, these types of courses are also in California and
New Mexico where the same brainwashing goes on.

denial is an important part of the psychological protection system that resides in our brains. It's why victims of certain terrible crimes erase the memory from their frontal lobes. We need to lie to ourselves. It's why we are easy for the establishment to lie to us. The truth is painful ,sad and immutable. But our cognizance of the truth, now that is clay to be molded such that we can go on. We should be thankful for that, I suppose.

These books were not banned. They were removed from the classrom and are available at any library. I know no one commenting here has read the books used in this class. Here are selected quotes from Selected Writings from Message to Aztlan. Used in the Mexican American Studies course, taught to 3rd graders. “…. We demand that from kindergarten through college, Spanish be the first language and English the second language …” ” They say the Spaniards conquered Mexico And that the Indian mothers won the war against The Spanish father settlers. Weren't europeans the ones who left their continent and travelled to other groups nations, spread diseases, destroyed their cultures, took over their national resources and conquered them by the sword,cannon or subterfuge or forced religion? Weren't europeans the ones who took it upon themselves to travel to the ME and kill others because they choose to have a different faith? What am I missing in the historical record? I really am curious...

This is beyond banning ideas. This is a total blackout of any historical contributions of non-whites. But what purpose could this possibly serve? What about non-white history is deemed such a threat that it must be expunged? When the state engages in this sort of behavior, why aren't arizonans screaming “communism”?
