The risk to humans of CJD from BSE -- it may be there, but the statistics get tortuous -- scares people enough to push down beef sales and futures. The extremely clear data on beef (all beef, not just diseased beef) and bowel cancer have almost no effect.
Why?

Why? It always has been and 100X more so since Bush, see below.

One of the first things Bush did was reduce funding for the inspection program by 90%. So before Bush 1 in 1,000 cows that went to slaughter in the US was tested. After Bush 1 in 10,000 - so basically they are not being inspected, not even downer cows. In Japan and some other countries all cows are tested before slaughter.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (mad human disease), from eating infected cows, has a gestation period of up to 15 years, is fatal in 100% of the cases, and only takes about one horrible, painful week to kill.

Best approach is to, as sharonsj says, become a vegetarian or eat only certifiable, grass fed beef. The disease cannot be transmitted from cows that have never eaten feed meal.

It's not that beef is at risk again. Add it to a long list of stuff the corporations don't want you to know about. Vegetarianism is starting to look real good....

Mad Cow disease (and ditto for deer and elk) has been in the U.S. for many years, but it has been ignored by the media.
