That ownership law has either been phased out, or is being phased out, in the last few years. I believe the change is one of the negative effects of NAFTA. Certainly non-citizens can now buy homes in Mexico. I'm not sure about the situation with other kinds of property.

The ownership laws were the necessary steps taken after, I believe, the 1910 revolution to prevent foreign corporations, mostly US, from doing to Mexico what they were in the process of doing to most of the Central American countries. Essentially owning almost the entire country, or at least the best land, for use as mono crop plantations and resource extraction. think United Fruit in Guatamala.

Oh, yes. Mostly you find these stories in the left leaning media - what little there is in this country -, such as Pacifica Radio, and some of the independant alternative newspapers, like the Bay Guardian in San Francisco.

There are news stories, and movies, about the plight of illegals in Mexico.Unfortunately they rarely get much play in the mainstream media. If deaths are taking place that needs to be addressed in the courts and hopefully it will be stopped. Just like putting people to death after a sentence of death. While they are to be detained until trial or seeing a judge I would think most people would have to agree just on the basis of what the DNA tests have shown. I mean how many people have been released when at the time of trial there was no way they could be innocent. So the ole “We don’t put innocent people in jail/prison” does not hold up to the facts of reality. Arizona being next to Texas (cowboy gun toting state)does not help them much in my book either but I do realize they have had to deal with the border issue for years while each president has put a band aid on it with amnesty for illegal aliens. So I know they end up paying for what the Feds are supposed to be doing in the first place. I do not see the easy solution to this border issue. I see both sides and while understanding is neither a solution nor resolution there needs to be action other than what we have done in the past. I was glad to see that they did include the extra clarification yesterday. Hopefully this will also help the mistakes from taking place of sending US Citizens to Mexico. Not to mention the law suits that have to be taking place on those mistakes.

If like you say some of these guys have not yet been to court then I think they deserve their rights to stay intact without interruption. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

Sheriff Joe is a piece of $%#@ who abuses prisoners and treats dogs better than he does people. I agree that prisoner's don't deserve to live in luxury, but many of the people that live in Tent City (where temps can get into the 120's in the summer) have not yet been CONVICTED of any crime. They are awaiting trial on charges and are often set free after legal proceedings. These people aren't murderers and rapists either. Most of them are there for simple crimes like marijuana possession, which I don't even feel should be a crime, but it is now so... He has been sued for several inmate deaths due to poor treatment. He has an isolation chair that he used to put inmates in to punish them that restricts their movement and sometimes their breathing, and this has led to more than one person's death. The guy is not a good guy. He is a media whore that has a camera with him wherever he goes to toot his own horn. This isn't the 1920's. Prisoner's rights have been addressed in most places, but Sheriff Joe prefers to go back to the old days where prisoners were worse than animals. I don't think that it is right.

Well, after our conversation started, they rewrote the law to address the concerns that I had with it. I like it even more for the good enough for soldiers. I do know a guy that was put into prison for 11 yrs. for a murder he did not commit. So I know some people in the system need to be more cautious when they do their jobs. I feel the system is the best in the world but it is the people within the system that create problems, case problems, allow mistakes and distortions sometimes to go unchecked. Also, that there was a day that police represented the law and now have come to believe that "THEY ARE THE LAW". I think this thinking is totally wrong.

REPLY to comment below sharon618.

That is why I liked the idea of these guys that hit women wearing PINK underwear. It's not the government's fault that the Hispanic community comprises more than 80% of the illegal population. They can blame this all on themselves. If it was another group that comprised the most illegal immigrants then there'd be no talk of racism. Any patriotic US CITIZEN should have no qualm with having to show proof of citizenship if asked. The ones worrying and protesting the most are those who have no business being in this country and the TRAITORS who aid/abet/support/encourage/finance and employ them and THOSE people should have their citizenship revoked and be deported to no-mans-land.

Total BS.
