A group called "Smart Capitalists for American Prosperity," which boasts some of the country's top financiers, business leaders, and investors, is in the nation's capital today to do something that all foreward-thinking citizens should consider doing: Announcing their support for raising the federal minimum wage.

This week on the AlterNet Radio Hour, RJ Eskow -- a fellow at the Campaign for America's Future and host of The Breakdown -- and Joshua Holland untangle the ugly fiction that half the country are indolent "takers," while half are tax-paying "makers." It's not true -- but what does it mean that a candidate from a major party would suggest that it is?
Then we're joined by former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who explains that it wasn't some dumb movie-trailer that's set much of the "Muslim world" on fire.

Eyebrows were raised after a pair of Univision forums for the two Presidential candidates revealed a modest, quiet crowd for the President and an extremely raucous crowd for his challenger. Turns out, the Romney camp strongarmed the network into allowing them to bus in activists.

Yesterday, the New York Times reported on an alarming new study: researchers have documented that the least educated white Americans are experiencing sharp declines in life expectancy. Between 1990 and 2008, white women without a high school diploma lost a full five years of their lives, while their male counterparts lost three years.

As of Wednesday, New Mexico’s Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) is considering a positive new amendment to its child-care assistance policy, which would exempt survivors of rape and incest from filing child-support claims against absent parents. Current policy dictates that all parents, if they want to receive state funds for child care, must file child-support claims against the other parent.

Paul Ryan was booed at the AARP Annual Convention in New Orleans as he told retirees and others in the audience that he wanted to repeal Obamacare and turn Medicare into a system where individuals would receive vouchers from the government that could be used toward monthly healthcare costs.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Ryan began his address by saying how a Romney-Ryan administration would seek to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The LAT said:
I'm Kali Holloway and I'm Digging for Stories Where the Corporate Media Doesn't Go
Hi AlterNet Readers,
I’m Kali, AlterNet investigative reporter. Trolls have made stalking, harassment and intimidation an everyday hazard of going online. I’ve spent weeks in the troll cesspools to understand how they operate and why.
Trolls target women, people of color, LGBT folks, Jews and Muslims. And they love Donald Trump.
Trump’s racism, misogyny and hatred has united neo-Nazis and women-haters with the goal of getting him elected and spreading their toxic ideas.
With backing from supporters like you, I have the freedom to go deep into dark topics like this one -- and expose things we all should know.
We need to raise $15,000 in the next two weeks to hit our goal and continue this necessary work, both mine and the rest of our team.
