Dr. Dan L. Edmunds, Ed.D., founder of the International Center for Humane Psychiatry, noted psychotherapist in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and Professor of Existential Psychology has teamed with Jarrad Dickson, an university student from New Zealand and psychiatric survivor in developing a new approach towards the understanding of extreme states of mind, what psychiatry labels as ‘psychoses’.
Dr. Edmunds and Mr. Dickson are collaborating on a book MYSTICAL METAPHORS which describes the mystical and spiritual nature of the experience labeled as psychosis. The premise is that these experiences can be understood and it is a mistaken approach to seek to suppress them, that with the proper support and guidance, these experiences can be a transformation, they need not be all breakdown as Laing suggested but breakthrough.
Dr. Edmunds and Dickson are developing self help programs as well as consultation on their new work. For more information, see the internet site of the International Center for Humane Psychiatry
